A water pump is a vital part of a car’s cooling system. Its primary purpose is to continually circulate coolant from the radiator to the vehicle’s engine block to prevent overheating. If the water pump fails, it can cause a number of problems with a vehicle.

SYMPTOMS:

• engine noise
• overheating engine

TOOLS:

• jack and stands
• wrenches
• screwdrivers
• pliers
• large container

Materials:

• coolant
• water pump
• gasket maker

PROCEDURES:

• drain the coolant
• remove the compressor and the alternator belt
• remove the five bolts from the water pump
• remove the water pump
• prepare the new water pump and apply a gasket maker
• install the new water pump
• tighten the bolts
• put on the compressor and the alternator belt
• pour coolant into the radiator
• start the engine and bleed the coolant
• inspect for leaks
