MAP Sensor Testing Using a Multimeter
February 11, 2023
A MAP sensor measures the amount of air pressure in proportion to the vacuum inside the intake manifold. The pressure is then converted into a voltage signal, which the sensor sends to the car’s computer.
MATERIALS:
- multimeter
- pins
- alligator clips
PROCEDURES:
- insert the pins into the socket
- connect the black wire to the ground of the car
- search for the ground wire
- the car must not be turned on
- set the multimeter to ohms continuity mode
- connect the red wire to the pins one by one until it beeps
- take note of the wire that beeps
- search for the power wire
- turn the ignition on
- set the multimeter to voltage mode higher than 5 volts
- connect the red wire to one of the pins
- when the voltage reading is 5 volts, then it is the power wire
- take note of the power wire
- the remaining wire is the signal wire
- start the car
- the reading of the power wire is still at 5 volts
- the signal wire should read 1 to 2 volts at the car’s idle
- when the throttle is open, the voltage usually increases, otherwise, the MAP sensor is malfunctioning
